Tips for Coping With Dry Skin Posted Oct. 15, 2013

Wintertime does a number on our skin. Yes, nothing beats a snow day — but it puts a big damper on the fun when your skin has to pay the price.

There’s no reason why your skin has to suffer during the winter months. Here's a few tips to save you from a winter season of itching and discomfort.Trust us, your skin will thank you.

Indulge in coconut oil

We’ve said it before: coconut oil is the nectar of the gods. It is chock-full of laurel acid, which prevents itchiness and inflammation. When applied to your skin, it acts as a moisturizer that stays in action around the clock. All of Old Man Murray’s soaps contain a minimum of 20% coconut oil, so you can cure dry skin and smell amazing all in one go.

Sweeten up with honey

Honey is an effortless way to banish dry skin. Because it is a humectant, it both attracts and maintains moisture on the skin. It is also chock-full of Vitamin C, which repairs skin that has been damaged by weathering. If you’re really suffering, you can add 1/4 cup of honey to a bath and soak to get relief. Or, you can make honey a part of your everyday regimen with our organic Honey Butter Soap.

(Fun fact: researchers have found that honey can also function as an antibiotic. It really is the jack-of-all-trades!)

Oatmeal isn’t only for eating

When your skin is crying out for help, oatmeal can be an excellent cure. It is a natural exfoliant, so it essentially peels away your dry, dead layers of skin to reveal one that is more moisturized. Just like honey, you can take an oatmeal bath to feel rejuvenated - most doctors recommend that 3 cups of ground oatmeal mixed with lukewarm water will do the trick. Our organic Honey Butter Soap also contains finely ground oatmeal that will attend to your skin every time you step in the shower!

Soothe with comfrey root

For centuries, comfrey root has been a staple natural remedy. Known to cure rashes and inflammation, it is the perfect way to assuage your dry skin. It also contains Allantoin, which rejuvenates dead skin and fosters new skin growth. For an effortless (and heavenly) fix, our Lavender Soap could become your new best friend: it’s loaded with restorative comfrey root.
